Lead Generation

Why Most Cabinet Dealer Websites Lose Leads in the First 8 Seconds

Visitors decide fast whether to stay. Here's what the research says a dealer site has to do before they hit the back button.

·

A homeowner taps your ad or your map listing on their phone. Before they read a word, your page has to load. Then it has to answer three questions fast: do you do what I need, are you near me, and how do I reach you? If it doesn't, the back button is one tap away.

The research on how quickly people leave is older than you might like, but it keeps pointing the same way.

The First Few Seconds Are About Speed

Google data found that 53% of mobile site visits are abandoned if pages take longer than 3 seconds to load. That figure comes from a sample of about 3,700 mobile sites measured in March 2016, so treat it as directional.

53%Share of mobile site visits abandoned when pages take longer than 3 seconds to load, from Google data on about 3,700 mobile sites (March 2016).

A later Google analysis predicted that as page load time goes from one second to ten, the probability of a mobile visitor bouncing increases 123% (Think with Google, 2018).

Bigger studies connect speed to sales, with a catch for lead-based businesses. In Milliseconds Make Millions, Deloitte Digital looked at mobile data from 37 brands and found a 0.1-second speed improvement came with 8.4% more conversions on retail sites. For lead generation sites the picture was mixed: visitors were 21.6% more likely to get from the first step of a form to the submission page, but overall lead-gen conversion rates dipped in that sample.

Google's current yardstick is Core Web Vitals. A page is in good shape when its main content loads within 2.5 seconds (Largest Contentful Paint), it responds to taps within 200 milliseconds (Interaction to Next Paint), and the layout doesn't jump around (a Cumulative Layout Shift of 0.1 or less), measured at the 75th percentile of visits.

The Next Ten Seconds Are About Clarity

Once the page loads, the clock keeps running. Nielsen Norman Group found users often leave web pages within 10 to 20 seconds, and that "to gain several minutes of user attention, you must clearly communicate your value proposition within 10 seconds."

For a cabinet dealer, the first screen should show:

  • What you sell, in plain words: kitchen cabinets, bathroom vanities, design and installation.
  • Where you work: your city and service area.
  • Proof: your Google rating, a real project photo or a short client quote.
  • One clear next step: call, text or book a design consultation.

Three Things to Check on Your Own Site

You don't need an agency to run these. Do them on your own phone, off Wi-Fi.

1. Load time

Open your homepage on cellular data and count. Then run it through Google's free PageSpeed Insights, which reports your Core Web Vitals. On a design-heavy site, large uncompressed project photos are the first thing worth checking.

2. The ten-second test

Show your homepage to someone who's never seen it, give them ten seconds, then take the phone back. Can they tell you what you sell, where you are and how to contact you? If not, rewrite the first screen.

3. The contact path

Tap your phone number. Does it dial? Fill out your form. How long did it take, and did anyone get back to you? The research on form length is mixed. A HubSpot analysis of 40,000+ landing pages found conversions dropped as fields increased, though not steeply, while a test reported by CXL saw conversions fall 14% after fields were removed. Keep the form short, then test it.

Don't test on your phone alone. In August 2026, StatCounter measured about 42% of page views in Canada and the US on mobile and about 55% on desktop. Your site has to work on both.

After the Form Comes In

A fast, clear site gets you the inquiry. What happens next decides whether it turns into an estimate. Read Why Cabinet Dealers Lose Leads Before the Estimate Lands for the response side, or start with a Marketing Audit if you'd like an outside look at the whole path.
